Hang in the Air
Hang in the Air is a video prose that poetically explores the ruins of an unfinished housing development outside Shenyang, China.
Moving through silent rooms and bare corridors, the camera captures a maze-like world of raw concrete walls punctuated by hollow doors and windows. Within this fragmented interior landscape suspended in time, visual clues hint at lives once lived or yet to come - fish bones, garbage, artifacts from visitors, a water puddle’s quiet reflections. As a voiceover in Mandarin meanders on presence and absence, the fault lines of time and space reveal themselves. Artificially connected still images of decay and texture interweave with the narration, which navigates the fragments like a thread stitching together an uncanny dreamscape. Each line of the texual prose blends into the visual motifs, transforming discrete ruins into a moving space that evokes both loss and serenity in lives unfinished, hanging in the air.
